How to play Murder Mystery Sudoku

Every day there is a new murder and a new sudoku. Solve the grid, read the evidence, and name the killer.

  1. Solve the sudoku

    Fill every row, column and 3×3 box with the numbers 1 to 9, each exactly once. The printed numbers are your clues, and there is only one way to finish the grid.

  2. Read the evidence

    Three cells are outlined in red: S for the suspect, W for the weapon and L for the location. Their numbers are the answer.

  3. Name the killer

    Match each number to the lists of suspects, weapons and locations, then make your accusation. You get three tries before the case goes cold.

Sudoku tips for beginners

  1. Start with the busiest areasRows, columns or boxes with six or seven numbers already in place are the quickest to finish.
  2. Scan one number at a timePick a number, say 5, and check each box without one. If the 5 in nearby rows and columns leaves only one free cell, it goes there.
  3. Use NotesPencil in the numbers a cell could still be. When only one is left, the cell is solved.
  4. Look for pairsIf two cells in a box can only be 2 or 7, no other cell in that box can be 2 or 7. That often unlocks the rest of the box.
  5. Never guessEvery case can be solved by logic alone. If you are stuck, look again at the rows and columns through the cell you are working on.

Monday and Tuesday give you plenty of starting numbers. By Friday and Saturday there are fewer, with longer chains of logic. Sunday is a tricky one to round off the week.

When does the new case open?

A new case opens every day at midnight, New York time. Earlier cases stay available in the case archive.

Can I print the puzzle?

Yes. Press Print to get a clean one-page worksheet with the grid, the suspects, weapons and locations, and space to write your answer. The solution is printed upside down at the bottom.

Does every puzzle have one solution?

Yes. Every case is checked by computer before it is published, so the grid has exactly one solution and the evidence points to a single killer.

What happens if I make a mistake?

Numbers that clash in a row, column or box are highlighted as you play, and Check shows which of your numbers are wrong. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can come back later.

Can I use these puzzles in a classroom?

Yes. Teachers and clubs are welcome to print cases for non-commercial use. They are a fun way to practise logical thinking.
